Denigrated for years by Journalists, and not even reviewed by the Wine Spectator, I have always felt that the “Petit Chablis” appellation was under rated, since in today’s day and age if the terroir is good, and if the winemaker is great…that some Petit Chablis’ can stand up to Crus produced by others. Well, this time, I have gotten lucky. Last year a good friend in burgundy introduced me to Alain Pautre, who has never exported to the States. The Pautre estate is in Ligorelle, on the Northwestern edge of the appellation. The vines are 30 to 40 years old, and located on a calciferous plateau, beside a forest, facing south. This truly is the best area for the Petit Chablis Appellation. Monsieur Pautre is passionate about quality, and his wine is the traditional ”profile” of what a great Chablis should taste like. Good acidity, citrus aroma, structure, mass, flintiness. And it beats several regular Chablis’. He does not own a bottling line, and the wine is moved to the village of Prehy where it is bottled, by his partner. 100% Chardonnay, 100% stainless steel.
